Anytime the search field is applicable (user list, course list, etc.), have the search bar remain there. It is extra unnecessary clicking to click the magnifying glass for the field to expand.

Also, clicking the 'x' shouldn't close the field. When you click the 'x', it's supposed to clear the information in that field. Again, unnecessary clicking if you didn't mean to close the field.
