How to sell digital media

Overview

With e-commerce enabled on your platform, you can sell individual digital media such as video, audio, or PDF files.  This article will show you how set up your files so you can sell them through your catalog.

Selling digital media

To create a digital media file you can sell:
  1. Hover over Admin on the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click E-commerce from the fly-out menu.
    1. If E-commerce is not available, it is not enabled on your platform. To learn how to enable e-commerce on your platform, visit the E-commerce article.
  3. Click Digital media from the Items table.

  1. Add a Name for the digital media.
  2. Click Save.
The name of the digital media that will be displayed to customers shows in the upper left. In the example below, the name is Leadership video. To upload your file:
  1. Click Upload content.

  1. Drag and drop a file, or click click to browse to select a file from your computer.

  1. Name the file and add a Description.
  2. Select a Library for the file.
  3. Click Save

The file is added to the Digital media page. 

Configuring digital media

To begin configuring the digital media:
  1. Hover over Admin from the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click E-commerce from the fly-out menu.
  3. Click Digital media from the Items table.
  4. Select a digital media item.
  5. Hover over the Admin button on the secondary Digital media menu.
  6. Click Basics from the fly-out menu.

Basics tab

The Basics tab allows you to set the catalog descriptions and image for the digital media, and associate it with an organization.
  1. To edit the digital media name, author, and catalog descriptions, click Edit in the Overview section.
  2. To change the catalog picture, click Change picture in the Overview section. 
By default, the digital media is associated with the default organization. If you want to select a specific organization for the digital media:
  1. Click Edit in the Settings section.
  2. Select the organization for the digital media.
    1. Note that you can only select one organization.
  3. Click Save

Catalog tab

To configure how the digital media displays in the catalog:
  1. Click the Catalog tab.
The first section in the Catalog tab allows you to configure the following settings:
  1. Publish?: This checkbox publishes the digital media to the catalog. If the setting is unchecked, the digital media will be unpublished.
  2. Include short description?: When checked, the short description for the digital media is shown in the catalog.
  3. Include long description?: When checked, the long description for the digital media is shown in the catalog.
  4. Featured item?: When checked, the digital media will be shown as a featured item in the right panel of the catalog.
The Catalog tab also includes the following sections:
  1. Categories: Select the catalog categories where the digital media will be displayed.
    1. Click Edit categories to add or remove the digital media from existing categories.
    2. Click Add category to add the digital media to additional categories.
  2. Tile color: The Tile color section allows you to add a color to the left side of the tile in the catalog.
    1. Click the HEX color code to display a color picker.
    2. Select a color, or enter a HEX code to set a color for the left side of the catalog tile.
  3. Visibility: The Visibility section allows you to add filters to the digital media to limit which users can view it in the catalog.
    1. Click Add to add a visibility filter.
  4. SEO: The SEO section lets you add a meta description and keywords to the digital media file to improve its visibility in search results.
    1. Click Add to add a meta description and keywords to the digital media.


E-commerce tab

To price the digital media and add any purchase actions:
  1. Click the E-commerce tab.
The E-commerce tab allows you to set the price for the digital media. By default, newly created digital media files do not have a price. To add or edit the price:
  1. Click Edit Default Price.
  2. Set a price for the digital media in the pop-up.
  3. Click Save.
The platform also allows you to customize digital media pricing to match different locations, organizations, groups, and more. You can set up multiple filtered prices and the platform will automatically display the applicable price for each user based on their profile. To add a filtered price:
  1. Click Add Filtered Price from the Filtered Prices section.

  1. Enter the Price that will apply to users that meet the User Filter criteria.
  2. Select a Currency.
  3. Select a predefined filter or click the add add icon icon to add a new user filter.
    1. You can create a User Filter based on role, location, language, organization, tag, and more.

  4. Click Save.

The E-commerce tab also includes a Purchase actions section. The Purchase actions section allows you to add actions that are performed when the digital media is purchased, such as sending a notification or adding a user to a group. To add a purchase action:
  1. Click Add in the Purchase actions section.

The Add action pop-up displays. Depending on the set-up of your platform, the following actions are available across multiple tabs:
  1. Awards: Award badge, Award certificate, Award coupon, Award points.
  2. Integrations: Webhook, xAPI
    1. Additional integration options vary based on the set-up of your platform.
  3. Membership: Add to group, Enroll in course, Remove from group.
  4. Other: Add tag, Add to-do item, Archive, Deactivate, Remove tag, and Send custom notification
Select the action that should be performed when a user purchases the digital media. For example, if you want the user to be added to a group after purchasing the digital media:
  1. Click the Membership tab.
  2. Click Add to Group.
  3. Select the Group.
  4. Select a message option.
  5. Click Save.

The E-commerce tab also includes a Coupons section, where available coupons for the digital media display. To add a new coupon:
  1. Click Add in the Coupons section.

Note that the Coupons section does not appear if a price has not been set for the digital media.

  1. Enter a Name for the coupon.
  2. A Code is automatically provided, and can be edited.
    1. Users will enter the Code at checkout to apply the coupon.
  3. Select the Max uses for the coupon. This is the number of times the coupon can be used in total. 
    1. Note that Max uses defaults to Unlimited, meaning there is no limit to the number of times the coupon can be applied.
  4. Select Once per user if you would like to limit the use of a coupon to one time per user.
    1. Please note that a "single order" applies to the eligible items in a single order. If you select the Once per user option, the coupon is applied to eligible items in a single shopping cart checkout.
  5. Set the Discount amount for the coupon. This can be a fixed amount, such as $10.00, or a percentage, such as 15%.
  6. Select the Enable time restriction checkbox if you would like to set a start and end date for the coupon to be valid.
  7. After configuring your coupon, click Save.

Purchasing Digital media

Digital media items are visible in the catalog in the same way as courses, bundles, and subscriptions. To purchase digital media, users:
  1. Access the Catalog.
  2. Click the digital media (which may be displayed within a category).
  3. Click the Purchase button.
  4. Complete the checkout process.
