How to set up a Microsoft Teams integration with CYPHER Learning

Overview

The CYPHER Learning platform allows you to integrate with many popular third-party web conferencing systems to schedule meetings directly in the platform.  To learn more about which web conferencing tools are supported, visit the Web conferencing article.

This article will help you set up an integration with MS Teams to schedule meetings using the calendar, by adding a Web conferencing section to a module, and through the HTML editor. 

Configuring the MS Teams web conferencing gateway

The MS Teams integration allows users to schedule web conference meetings directly from the calendar, content pages, assessments, and more. 

To begin, you must first install the MS Teams app:

  1. Click Admin from the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click App center from the fly-out menu.
  3. Install the MS Teams app from the Web conferencing section.

Once the MS Teams app is installed, follow the steps below to configure your account:

  1. Navigate to https://portal.azure.com/ and login to your account.
  2. Click View in the Manage Microsoft Entra ID section.

Next:
  1. Click App registrations from the left navigation menu.

  1. Click New registration.

The Register an application page displays.
  1. In the Name field, enter a name for the application. This can be changed later and is only for informative purposes.
  2. Select the Accounts in any organizational directory (Any Microsoft Entra ID tenant - Multitenant) and personal Microsoft accounts (e.g. Skype, Xbox) radio button in the Supported account types section.
Next, you will return to the CYPHER Learning platform to gather information for the Redirect URI.

In the CYPHER Learning platform:

  1. Click Admin from the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click MS Teams from the fly-out menu.

The MS Teams page displays.
  1. Click Configure.

  1. Copy the Redirect URL.
Then, navigate back to the Azure app registration screen.

On the Register an application page:

  1. Select Web from the first drop-down in the Redirect URI section.
  2. Paste the redirect URL from CYPHER Learning in the Redirect URI field.
  3. Click Register.

The application is registered.

  1. Click API permissions from the left navigation menu.

The API permissions page displays:
  1. Click  + Add a permission.
  2. Click Microsoft Graph.

On the Request API permissions slide out screen:

  1. Click Delegate permissions.

In the Select permissions section, search for the following permissions and enable them:

  • Calendars.ReadWrite
  • OnlineMeetings.ReadWrite
  • OnlineMeetingArtifact.Read.All
  • User.Read

The permissions appear under the Microsoft Graph heading in the Configured permissions section.

Next:
  1. Click Certificates & secrets from the left navigation menu.

The Certificates & secrets page displays.

  1. Click + New client secret.

The Add a client secret side menu appears.
  1. Enter a Description.
  2. Set an expiration for the secret in the Expires field.
  3. Click Add.

InfoNote: Once the secret expires, you will have to repeat these steps and update the configuration.

A new Client secret displays.
  1. Click the Copybutton for the Value field. 
Next, you will navigate back to the CYPHER Learning platform.

On the MS Teams Settings tab:
  1. Paste the Client secret Value in the Client secret field.
Then, navigate back to the Azure Certificates & secrets page.

  1. Click Overview from the left navigation menu.
  2. Copy the Application (client) ID value. 
Then, navigate back to the CYPHER Learning platform.

On the MS Teams Settings tab:
  1. Paste the Application (client) ID value in the Client id field.
Then, navigate back to the Azure Certificates & secrets page.

  1. Copy the Directory (tenant) ID value.
Then, navigate back to the CYPHER Learning platform.

On the MS Teams Settings tab:
  1. Paste the Directory (tenant) ID value in the Client tenant id field.
  2. Click Save.

Setting up a MS Teams integration

After the MS Teams web conferencing integration has been configured, you can create and insert a link to an MS Teams meeting using the HTML Editor on calendar events, content pages, assessments, and more. To add a MS Teams link using the HTML editor:
  1. Click the more  button on the toolbar secondary menu to open the advanced toolbar.
  2. Click the Create web conferencing  icon.
  3. Select MS Teams from the drop-down menu.

When you click the icon for the first time, a sign-in box will open.
  1. Click the Sign in button.

Enter your Microsoft 365 credentials.

After signing-in:
  1. Click the Create meeting link button.

  1. Enter the details of the meeting.
  2. Click Create.

The link to the meeting is inserted onto the page. The default text for the link contains the name of the meeting together with its start and end times. To save the updated content:

  1. Click Save.

After saving the content page, the link becomes active.

When users click the link, a new tab opens, providing users with options on how to access the meeting.
  1. Click Continue on this browser to join the meeting using a web browser.
  2. Click Join on the Teams app if you have the MS Teams app installed on your desktop or device.

  1. Enter your name and select your audio and video settings.
  2. Click Join now when you are ready to join the meeting.

Automated Attendance

The automated MS Teams attendance is a feature that automatically updates the attendance list in a course with the attendees list from an MS Teams conferencing section. To utilize this feature, you must have:

  • The MS Teams app installed from the App center.
  • A configured MS Teams web conferencing gateway.
  • A class with attendance enabled.
