Course and class completion

Overview

Course and class completions are an important part of the platform, as they help track learner progress, provide records for compliance or audits, and provide data for reports.
Info
CYPHER for business defaults to courses, and CYPHER for academia defaults to classes. The terms courses and classes are interchangeable in this article.
The platform allows you to customize how completions are earned at the course/class, module/lesson, and section level.

Completion basics

By default, a course or class is considered complete when all modules within the course are completed.

Section completions vary by type. Specific completion settings can be configured for each section type.

Section: Pages

  1. By default, a page section is considered completed when the learner visits the page. 
  2. You can adjust this setting and require a Complete and Continue button instead.
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Click Admin from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click Completion from the flyout menu.
    4. Deselect the Automatically complete a page section when it is visited checkbox.

Section: Videos

  1. By default, users do not have to watch all videos in order for a section to be completed.
  2. If you would like to require users to watch all videos in a section:
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Click Admin from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click Completion from the flyout menu.
    4. Select the Require video completion checkbox. 
      1. Please note that the 'Require video completion' option applies specifically to the completion of the section where the videos are located.

Video completion tracking is only available for videos that are added as a Resource to the platform. Video completion tracking is not currently available for third party videos such as YouTube or Vimeo, or videos that are added to a section as a file.

When a learner or student accesses a section with required videos, the status of each video is shown at the bottom of the video.
  1. The video will retain users' progress and allow them to resume the video, even if they leave the page.
  2. The first time a user watches a video, they are able to rewind the video, but not fast forward.

Completing a section with required videos varies based on section settings.

  1. If automatically complete a page section when it is visited is selected, the section automatically completes when the learners has finished watching all videos.
  2. If automatically complete a page section when it is visited is not selected, the learner must click Complete and Continue after watching all videos.

Section: Assessments

Assessment completion settings can be adjusted.
  1. Assessments can be configured so that they are are considered complete when a learner or student passes the completion threshold.
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Access a module or lesson.
    3. Click the assessment page.
    4. Click the Completion tab.
    5. Click Edit in the Completion requirements section to adjust the assessment completion threshold percentage.

  1. Assessments can also be configured so they do not require a completion threshold percentage.
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Access a module or lesson.
    3. Click the assessment section.
    4. Click the Completion tab.
    5. Click Remove.
      1. The assessment below does not require a passing score.

Section: SCORM

SCORM completion settings can also be adjusted.
  1. By default, SCORM sections are completed when a 'completed' or 'passed' status is returned from the SCORM files.
  2. If you would like to override the default settings.
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Access a module or lesson.
    3. Click the SCORM section.
    4. Click the Options tab.

Tracking user progress through a course

Icons displayed next to modules and sections indicate user progress.
  •  Completed - indicates that the module or section is completed.
  •  Partial - indicates that the module or section is partially completed.
  •  Failed - indicates that the module or section is failed.
    • If the assessment allows multiple submissions, users can retake the section.

    Sequencing

    By default, learners and students can complete modules and sections in any order.
    If you want to require users to complete modules and/or sections in order:
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Click Admin from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click Configure from the flyout menu.
    4. Click the Completion tab.
    5. Select the Require modules to be completed in order checkbox.
    6. Select the Require sections to be completed in order checkbox.

    Modifying course completion

    To modify the way a course completion is calculated:
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Click Admin from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click Completion from the fly-out menu.
    4. Click Enable or Disable in the Completion section.
      1. The default setting is for courses/classes to be considered complete when all required modules are completed. In the image below, the completion setting had been disabled.

    To add an additional requirement to a course completion:
    1. Click + add requirement.

    Completion rules 

    You can define actions to be performed upon completion for courses, modules, sections, and assessments.

    Add a rule at the course level 

    To add rules at a course level:
    1. Access a course or class.
    2. Click Admin from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click Configure from the flyout menu.
    4. Click the Completion tab.
    5. Click + Add in the Completion actions section.

    1. Access: Includes actions such as hide, show, or lock for modules, sections, and assessments.
    2. Awards: Award badges, certificates, coupons, or points to learners after completing a course.
    3. Integrations: Issue Credly badges, post to a message queue, invoke an API, or invoke xAPI.
    4. Membership: Add or remove learners from groups or enroll them in another course.
    5. Other: Add tags, to-do items, custom messages and more.

    Add a rule at the module or section level

    To add rules at a module, section, or assessment level:
    1. Access the module, section, or assessment.
    2. Click the Completion tab.
    3. Click + Add in the Completion actions section.

    Manual completion

    The platform supports manual completions. To mark a learner or student complete:

    1. Access the course or class.
    2. Click Learners from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click the Active tab.
    4. Select the learners or students.
    5. Click Complete

    Note that a manual completion does not affect the completion status of an individual section/module.

    Manual completions will trigger any completion rules associated with that course and learners will be moved into the Completed list.

    In the learner view, the course will be moved into the Completed area of the learner's dashboard.

    Uncompletion

    The platform also allows you to remove a completion. 

    1. Access the course or class.
    2. Click Learners from the course/class navigation menu.
    3. Click the Completed tab.
    4. Select the learners or students.
    5. Click Uncomplete

    The  Completed flag will be removed and the selected learners will be moved to the Active list.

    Note that this option has no effect on completion status for individual modules or assessments, and it does not revert course completion rules that may have been previously triggered.
