Google Drive assignments

Google Drive assignments

Overview

With the new Google Drive Assignments application, instructors can share assignment files directly from their personal Google Drive with their students. By doing so, Google Drive automatically creates an individual assignment file for each student, therefore eliminating the need to navigate away from the LMS and into different browser windows to access assignments/files in Google Drive. The student assignment files are saved directly into the instructor’s Google Drive for easy access.

Configuring Google Assignments

To begin using Google Drive Assignments in your courses, you must first install the app from the App Center. To do so:
From the left navigation bar, click Admin and then App Center.

Navigate to the search field on the right side of the screen. Enter “Google Drive assignment” into the field and press Enter.
Info
If you are a CYPHER for business user, please note the application is called Google Drive assessments in the App Center.

Find the Google Drive Assignment app and click Install.

Adding Google Drive Assignments

Once the Google Drive Assignment app is installed, you can begin adding assignments to your courses. To do so:

Navigate to the course and from the course landing page, click Assessments.

Click Add.

In the Add assessment pop up, click Google Drive assessment.

Populate the assessment information and click Save.

The assignment page opens and you will enable your Google Drive account to do the assignment. Click Enable.

A pop up appears to prompt you to sign in with your Google credentials. Click the appropriate Google account.

At the confirmation screen, click Allow.

Click the Google Drive file tab.

Click + Select.

The files available on Google Drive are listed. Select the appropriate file(s) and click Save.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Files that appear embedded in the course are Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides files. PDFs and Microsoft Office files will not be embedded.

The file is embedded on the course page from the Google Drive interface.

When the student clicks Prepare Answer, their individual copy of the file will be created in the Google Drive.

Note: If the teacher doesn’t assign a specific document, Google Drive will create a new blank document in the Google Drive for the assignment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the instructor does not select a document, and has not given access to Google Drive and the instructor clicks Give to make the assignment available, they will receive an error message to enable the Google Drive integration.

Instructor View

Once a Google Drive Assignment is added to a course, instructors can view, edit and grade the assignment from the assignment page. To do so:

Navigate to the course and click Assessments. Click the appropriate assignment.

Click the Scores tab.

Next to the student name, click the pencil icon in the Show/Score column.

The assignment page opens with the Google Drive interface of the student’s submission.

After reviewing the assignment, the instructor can grade and enter comments on the right side of the screen.

Student View

When an instructor has added a Google Drive Assignment to a course, the students will see the following:

Navigate to the course and click Assessments. Click the appropriate Google Drive assignment.

On the assignment page, click + Prepare answer.

The Google document opens in the course page.

Once finished with the assignment, click Submit answer to submit the assignment to the instructor.

Once the assignment is submitted, no edits can be made to the document. Students can add comments to the document.

Note: If the teacher allows multiple submissions for an assignment, the student can edit and resubmit the assignment.
