Kaltura

Overview

Kaltura is a cloud-based platform for managing, streaming, and sharing video content. When integrated with your learning platform, you can upload media directly to Kaltura and access your Kaltura resources anywhere in the platform. For example, you can upload a video to Kaltura from the platform, then embed it on multiple pages across different courses.

Installing the Kaltura app

To enable the Kaltura integration, administrators must first install the app. To install the Kaltura app, administrators:
  1. Click Admin from the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click App center from the fly-out menu.
  3. Install the Kaltura app from the Video section of the app center.

Adding media to Kaltura

Once the Kaltura app is installed, you can begin adding media. To add media to Kaltura:

  1. Click Resources from the primary navigation menu.
  2. Click the My media tab.
  3. The My media tab will display all the resources you have uploaded to Kaltura.
  4. Click Add New.
  5. Select the type of media you want to add. If you would like to upload a video, select Media Upload.

  1. Click Choose a file to upload, or drag and drop a file to the upload area.

After selecting a file:

  1. Name the media.
  2. Add a description.
  3. Add tags (optional).
  4. Select a publishing schedule.
  5. Click Save.

Your new media will be uploaded, and display with the rest of your uploaded Kaltura resources in the My Media tab. There are multiple ways to locate videos in the My Media tab:

  1. Use the Search My Media search bar to locate media by name.
  2. Click Filters to select filters to display specific media.
  3. Use sorting options to sort the list by date, name, plays, or comments.
  4. Select a view type, such as Collapsed view or Detailed view.

To modify media:
  1. Click the edit icon to edit media.
  2. Click the delete icon to delete media.

Media files that are not used on the site (for example, they are not a part of a course or class) are listed with a Private tag.

If you add the media file to a course or embed the media, the media will display a Published tag. To identify which course(s) use the media file:

  1. Click the Published button to see a list of courses that use the media.

Using Kaltura resources

To use Kaltura media in a course or class, you must first add the Media tab. To add the Media tab to a course or class:
  1. Access the course or class.
  2. Click Admin from the course navigation menu. 
  3. Click Features from the fly-out menu.
  4. Select the Media checkbox.

To add Kaltura files to a course or class media library:
  1. Access the course or class.
  2. Click the Media tab.
  3. Click + Add Media

The Media Gallery will display.

  1. Ensure you are on the Media tab (as opposed to the Home tab).
  2. Select the checkbox for the Kaltura media file you would like to add to the course.
  3. Click Publish.

The media file is added. To delete a Kaltura file from a course or class media library:

  1. Click the three dot icon in the right corner of the tile.
  2. Click the remove from channel icon that will display on the tile.

You can also choose to upload a new file to Kaltura directly from the course Media Gallery. To add a new file:

  1. Click Add New from the Media tab of the Media Gallery.
  2. Select a media type.
    1. Note - If you add a new file, it will be added to the course's media library and the Resources > My media page.

You also have the option to embed Kaltura files directly into content pages of a course or class. To embed a Kaltura file to a course or class content page:

  1. Access the course or class.
  2. Access the section content page.
  3. Click the Upload file icon from the HTML editor toolbar.

  1. Select the My media tab.
  2. Click the </> Embed button next to the media file you want to embed.
    1. Note - You can also change the embed settings by clicking the Configure button.

Using Kaltura Classroom

The Kaltura integration also allows you to use Kaltura Classroom. Kaltura Classroom is a video conferencing tool that allows instructors and participants to interact.

To use Kaltura Classroom, you must first login to your Kaltura account and access your Kaltura Configuration Management console.
  1. Log into the Kaltura Management Console using your Kaltura credentials.
    1. This information will be provided by Kaltura.
  2. Access the Configuration Management console.
    1. Note - only Kaltura administrators can access the Configuration Management console.

Within the Configuration Management console:

  1. Search from the Newrow module.
    1. The Newrow module allows users to launch a real-time virtual room directly from Media Galleries.

In the NewRow module:
  1. Set the enableLiveRoomButtonbyDefault setting to Yes

Once the enableLiveRoomButtonbyDefault setting is set to yes, a new 'Start Meeting' button becomes available in the Kaltura media tab. To start a meeting in a course or class:
  1. Access a course or class.
    1. Ensure the course or class has the Media feature enabled.
  2. Click the Media tab. 
  3. Click Start Meeting

The Kaltura virtual classroom application is launched for the course. The Kaltura virtual classroom includes a chat room, whiteboard, video conferencing, and more.
