Overview

A debate assessment is a group-based activity where instructors present a proposition for learners to debate. Learners can contribute arguments supporting or opposing the proposition and cast their vote. In a debate assessment, learners can also challenge the arguments of other learners.

Adding a debate assessment to a course or class

To add a debate assessment:
  1. Access a course or class.
  2. Click Assessments from the course/class navigation menu.
  3. Click + Add.
  4. Click the Group tab.
  5. Click Debate.
    1. Enter your proposition and assessment details in the Debate pop-up.

Learners submissions

When learners access a debate, the proposition is presented on the Instructions tab.

  1. Learners can add a support submission for or against the proposition by clicking the  icon in the appropriate column.
  2. Learners can cast their vote for or against the proposition by clicking the  icon in the appropriate column.
  3. Learners can see the debate thread by clicking See entire debate.

Learners can view their submissions at any time. To access their submissions: 
  1. Learners click the Submissions tab.

To challenge another learner's submission:
  1. Learners click the Debate tab.
  2. Learners click + Challenge this reason.

Learners can change their vote at any time as long as submissions are still allowed. To clear a vote:
  1. Learners click the Instructions tab.
  2. Learners click - Clear your vote.

Instructors and learners can also subscribe to a debate assessment. To subscribe to a debate assessment:
  1. Click the Debate tab.
  2. Click Subscribe.

Grading and scoring

After learners have made a submission, they can be graded/scored. To score a debate submission:

  1. Click Assessments from the course/class navigation menu.
  2. Click the Debate assessment.
  3. Click the To score/To grade tab.
  4. Learner submissions are listed in the Posts column.
  5. If a learner has posted at least one submission, click the  icon to score the submission.
