Overview
The Paths feature is a powerful and flexible way to build content. Paths offer you the same robust feature set as courses, along with the ability to add two additional types of sections: Course goals and Certificate goals.
- A Course goal section requires learners to complete a specified course in order to complete the section.
- A Certificate goal section requires learners to earn a certificate to complete the section.
Note - Before creating Paths, ensure your administrator has installed the Paths app from the App center.
Creating a new path
To create a new path:
- Click or hover over Courses on the primary navigation menu.
- Click + Add from the fly-out menu.
The Add course pop-up displays.
- Click Path to create a new path.
- Click Path template to create a path template, which you can use to create new paths from.
- Please note that if you create a path template, it automatically creates a deep copy of all referenced courses.

The Add path pop-up displays.
- Name the path.
- Select a Style for the path:
- Instructor: Instructor-led training is a traditional approach to learning where a live instructor guides participants through the path content, either in-person or virtually.
- Blended: Blended learning is a combination of instructor led and self paced learning. These paths may have scored assessments that only allow learners to proceed once they have achieved a certain score.
- Self-paced: Self-paced learning allows learners to take the path anytime, anywhere. There is no schedule, no dates for particular modules, no due date for assessments, and no grading periods.
- Micro course: Selecting micro course results in a lightweight path that provides the learner with access to modules and sections, but fewer tabs.
- Enter an optional course duration.
- Click Save.

You can also create a path by copying an existing one. To copy an existing path:
- Access the existing path.

- Please note that when copying path templates, this option is enabled by default.
- Select Make the copy a child course to allow synchronization if you would like changes to the original path template to synchronize with the new path.
- If you are creating a new path (and not a path template), select any Learners you want pre-enrolled in the new course.
- You can add learners and students at any point after the path is created as well.
- Click Submit.
Configuring a path
Configuring a path is very similar to configuring a course. To learn more about configuration options, visit the Configure article.
There are several configuration settings that are specific to Paths. To access these settings:
- Access the path or path template.
- Click Admin from the path navigation menu.
- Click Path from the fly-out menu.
- In the Options section, you can enable:
- When a instructor is added to this class, also add them to all courses in the path: This setting can be enabled at the path or course level, and will add instructors to the entire path and all associated courses if they are added to any course included in the path.
- When a learner is enrolled into this class, also add them into all courses in the path: This setting can be enabled at the path or course level, and will enroll learners in the entire path and all associated courses if they are added to any course included in the path.
- Please note that both of these options are disabled by default.
In the Enrolled display section, you can control how paths appear in the learners' Courses widget.
- The path and also each course the learner in enrolled in.
- This is the default setting.
- The path or the course section that the learner has most recently visited, or just the path if none have been visited.
- The path but not the course sections the learner is enrolled in.
Adding goals to the learning path
The ability to add a course goal and a certificate goal are unique to learning paths.
To add a goal to a path, you must first add a new module:
- Access the path.
- Click Modules from the path navigation menu.
- Click + Add.
- Click New on the Add module pop-up.

- Click Save on the Add course goal pop-up.
If you select to add a certification, the Add certificate goal pop-up displays.
- Select a certificate from the list.

- Click Submit.
After they are added, course and certificate goal sections appear along with other section types. Paths allows you to create modules with a mix of sections, such as an introductory HTML section, a course goal section, and an assessment section. Paths also allow you to award certificates to learners.
Just like a conventional course, the path has a table of contents that displays learner progress through modules and sections.
Please note that if the course is set as a goal in a learning path, the enrollment automation action of the path will override course enrollment settings. The canned message in the target course is ignored when a learner is added via path automation. This allows the learning path to control the learner experience.
Adding course goals as assessments

To add a course goal as an assessment:
- Access a path.
- Click Modules from the path navigation menu.

- Click Edit in the Assessment widget in the right panel.
Course goals that are added as assessments will display in the path's score grid.
