Turnitin

Turnitin

Overview

Turnitin is a cloud-based service that does originality checking, online grading, and peer review that saves instructors time and provides rich feedback to learners. Turnitin helps instructors check learners' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a text comparison database.
Turnitin is a tool that:
  1. Helps instructors by indicating parts in learners' assessment that use very similar words to other documents in their database.
  2. Generates a report based on the percentage of similarities between learners' assessment and other works in the database. This is called the Originality Report.
To enable Turnitin, go to the App Center and install Turnitin.

Adding a Turnitin assessment

To add a Turnitin assessment, go to the Assessments area of a course, then click Add and select Turnitin.

Enter the details of the assessment, then click Save.

To edit the assessment's settings, click on "Turnitin Settings".

A pop-up will open with the Settings area.

In the Optional Settings area, you can configure options such as if you want to allow late submissions, how to compare submitted papers, and more.

You can also enable PeerMark. To do this, select the "Enable PeerMark" option, then click Submit.

After PeerMark is enabled, click "Turnitin Inbox" to configure the settings.

A pop-up will open. Click the Peermark dropdown and select "Peermark setup".

Enter your settings and click the "Save & Continue" button.

If the course is instructor-led, you can give the assessment to learners by clicking on 'Give'. If the course is self-paced, the assessment is automatically given.

Submissions

To submit their response, a learner clicks on Submit answer.

The learner is taken to the submission page on the Turnitin site where they can prepare their answer. Depending on the learner's instructions and the learner's preferences, learners can either upload a file as their answer, they can submit a text-based answer, or they can submit their answer via Google Driv, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

After learners have uploaded a file or prepared a text answer, they can click on "Upload and Review".

To send the submission, learners have to click on "Submit to Turnitin".

If a learner wants to submit another answer and they have not exceeded the maximum number of submissions, they can click "Resubmit answer".

Learners can see their submission in the Submissions tab. They can click 'View submissions' to see their submissions.

Grading

To see the learners submissions, you can click on "Turnitin Inbox" from the Overview tab, which will open a window with a list of the learner's submissions.

You can also visit the Scores tab. Here you will see the percent of similarities between the learner's submissions and the Turnitin database, a link to download the pdf version of the learner's answers, the submission date, and more.

To see a detailed originality report for a particular learner, click on the similarities percent next to the learner.

A window will open with the learner's submission that will highlight the copied content and the sources from where it was copied.

To grade the assessment, enter your score in the upper right section. The score will automatically be registered by our site and added to the grade book.

You can also grade an assessment by clicking the edit icon from the Grades tab, which will open the same window.

There is an option that allows instructors to use rubrics for grading Turnitin assessments. Click on Edit in the Scoring section, then go to Options and enable Ignore grade sent from Turnitin.

Viewing learner comments

Threaded comments allow instructors and learners to maintain a dialog for every submission. Learners can comment on Turnitin assessment in the comment section of the assessment's overview page.

When a learner posts a comment, you will receive a notification.

Please note that comments left by learners on Turnitin assessments can be seen only via the Scores tab of the course. To see the posted comments go to the Scores tab of the course, then navigate to the Turnitin assessment and double click on the learner's score cell to open the score pop-up.

Here you will see the score and the comment.
